Image and language in human reasoning: a syllogistic illustration.

چکیده
Existing accounts of syllogistic reasoning oppose rule-based and model-based methods. Stenning and Oberlander (1995) show that the latter are isomorphic to well-known graphical methods, when these are correctly interpreted. We here extend these results by showing that equivalent sentential implementations exist, thus revealing that all these theories are members of a family of abstract individual identification algorithms variously implemented in diagrams or sentences. This abstract logical analysis suggests a novel individual identification task for observing syllogistic reasoning processes. Comparison of the results of this task with the Standard Task confirms that the tasks are psychologically closely related, throwing light on sources of error, on subjects' sensitivity to metalogical properties, and on term-ordering phenomena. Since it avoids posing the subtask of formulating a quantified conclusion, the new task allows comparison of explanations of problem difficulty in terms of the number of models (e.g., Johnson-Laird & Bara, 1984) with alternatives in terms of the difficulty of choosing a quantifier for the conclusion. Logical concepts of source and conditional premisses provide a comprehensive account of term order data, including figural effects, at a level abstract with regard to imagistic or sentential representations. These results argue that much richer empirical evidence will be required to discriminate phenomenologically distinct reasoning processes than has hitherto been supposed.

Some arguments are probably valid: Syllogistic reasoning as communication
Syllogistic reasoning lies at the intriguing intersection of natural and formal reasoning, of language and logic. Syllogisms comprise a formal system of reasoning yet use natural language quantifiers, and invite natural language conclusions. How can we make sense of the interplay between logic and language? We develop a computational-level theory that considers reasoning over concrete situation...
متن کاملA specification-aware modeling of mental model theory for syllogistic reasoning
Computational cognitive models can embody the structures and processes proposed in a cognitive theory. However, they do not necessarily reveal the theory’s underlying assumptions and specifications. This study aims to bridge the gap between cognitive theory and its computational implementation, focusing on a case of mental model theory on human reasoning. Using a mathematics-based and staticall...
متن کاملToward Probabilistic Natural Logic for Syllogistic Reasoning
Natural language contains an abundance of reasoning patterns. Historically, there have been many attempts to capture their rational usage in normative systems of logical rules. However, empirical studies have repeatedly shown that human inference differs from what is characterized by logical validity. In order to better characterize the patterns of human reasoning, psychologists have proposed a...
متن کاملNexing Corpus: a corpus of verbal protocols on syllogistic reasoning
In this paper, we describe the Nexing Corpus and report on the tools implemented and the tasks undertaken for its development. The Nexing Corpus includes (i) a collection of written transcriptions of verbal data elicited during a psycholinguistic experiment on syllogistic reasoning; and (ii) performance data concerning that experiment, such as latencies, confidence levels and accuracy of answer...
متن کاملThe Data Complexity of the Syllogistic Fragments of English
Pratt and Third’s syllogistic fragments of English can be used to capture, in addition to syllogistic reasoning, many other kinds of common sense reasoning, and, in particular (i) knowledge base consistency and (ii) knowledge base query answering, modulo their FO semantic representations. We show how difficult, in terms of semantic (computational) complexity and data complexity (i.e., computati...
